Abstract

Context and issue: Current scientific evidence obliges us to recognise that students encounter difficulties in developing clinical reasoning skills. In addition, they must necessarily be stimulated in order to acquire these skills. However, there are few opportunities to practice and a lack of pedagogical resources available to help them The question we asked ourselves was: How can we encourage and promote the learning of clinical reasoning skills among medical students? Goals: To present the rationale behind the development of a new digital educational tool, aimed at promoting the development of clinical reasoning in the context of care, among students of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva; describe this educational tool. Description of the innovation: We have developed a video of a complete medical consultation, explicitly outlining and revealing the doctor’s clinical reasoning and brainwork during the history taking and physical examination. The video makes it possible to introduce meaning into each word and gesture of the physician during a consultation. Conclusion: The value of the theoretical knowledge accumulated by students throughout their studies is determined by their ability to interpret and reinvest it, in a real life clinical situation. Our new digital educational tool is designed to promote early learning of clinical reasoning so that students can enhance their knowledge and subsequently use it in a meaningful way.
