Abstract

Classic glass-cliff research shows that women are preferred to men when there is a risky and precarious leadership position at stake. Numerous studies try to apprehend the mechanisms responsible for these biased leadership choices. One of the open questions is whether female leaders are preferred in the times of crisis for their symbolic value to signal change? The current study demonstrated the presence of the glass-cliff phenomenon in the context of one of the world's largest international organisations, the United Nations (UN). As expected, a female candidate (vs. a male candidate) was preferred for leading a division in crisis. Remarkably, both male and female participants shared this preference pattern...
