Abstract

The classification of interpreting modalities sometimes differs considerably and lacks terminological precision. The present paper gives a complete overview, based on a clear, systematic approach. In terms of temporality, there are two modalities: consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting. These are further distinguished into several variations which differ from each other concerning the use of technology and the communicative situation. Some variations are cross-modal (or hybrid), because they combine elements of both modalities. For each modality, the paper explains the historical evolution, before continuing with a description of the practical process and the characteristics of the variations. This is complemented by chapters on the skills of the perfect interpreter and on the topic of communication and cognitive processes. The written part is to be accompanied by an e-learning module, which gives a succinct presentation of the content in English. The interactive, multimedia module is accessible online to a wide, uninitiated public.
