Data visualization in 3D city models : an environment for user evaluation

Defense date2015
Abstract

Enriched 3D city models are 3D models where non-geographic information is represented in addition to city objects. This kind of models is starting to become common in multiple fields of studies. However, there is very few work done on the subject itself. Furthermore, because of the cost of creating such models, they are often created without an iterative design phase beforehand. This means that there is a need for a rapid prototyping tool. This master thesis presents an implementation of such a tool. It follows a graph transformation approach to automatically generate visualizations: the first generation step uses SPARQL queries to create abstract objects from a city and data graph, the second step creates the concrete visualization objects by processing them with layout manager scripts that resolve positioning problems. This prototyping environment enables designers to easily create and modify visualization techniques. This paper shows how we recreate multiple examples from the literature with this environment. We also suggest a categorization of the managers according to their low and high level operations, to help create techniques more efficiently. The contributions of this thesis are: the prototyping environment, a proof-of-concept of the model in which the environment is based on and the rudimentary analysis of managers. By streamlining the creation of enriched 3D city models, we provide a tool to help both model creators and academics to study and evaluate their designs.
