Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disease of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a set of chronic inflammatory conditions resulting from inappropriate activation of the mucosal immune system. The two main types of IBDs are Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). TNF-­‐α is a proinflammatory cytokine and therefore a target for IBD treatment. The actual inhibitors of TNF-­‐α are Infliximab, Adalimumab and Certolizumab pegol. The latter are monoclonal antibodies and present safety issues.
