It is a set of chronic inflammatory conditions resulting from inappropriate activation of the mucosal immune system. The two main types of IBDs are Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). TNF-‐α is a proinflammatory cytokine and therefore a target for IBD treatment. The actual inhibitors of TNF-‐α are Infliximab, Adalimumab and Certolizumab pegol. The latter are monoclonal antibodies and present safety issues.
