Observational Insights into Hybrid Transitions: Identification of Non-Verbal Signals for Maintaining Continuity in Distributed Collaborative Interactions

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased flexibility in university teaching through video conferencing. However, disciplines such as service or object design require hybrid learning spaces integrating digital tools with physical object manipulation. Creativity Support Systems (CSS), which facilitate creative processes through technological means, and video conferencing facilitate remote collaboration but lack seamless integration into hybrid environments, insufficiently supporting exploration and prototyping. Video conferencing also restricts shared visual attention, embodied gestures, and co-presence, hindering interpretation of actions and intentions. To examine how these limitations affect hybrid transitions and collaboration continuity, this study employs video-based observational methods to analyze non-verbal interactions and transitions between digital and physical tools during prototyping. Five pre-selected video extracts were analyzed collaboratively by researchers and a student participant, identifying key hybrid collaboration challenges: coordinating viewpoints, maintaining commitment, managing interruptions, integrating physical-digital interactions, and ensuring effective documentation. These findings inform future applications to enhance continuity in distributed collaborative interactions.
