Abstract

This paper evaluates the adequacy of the Spanish translations of selected criminal law terms on WomensLaw.org, a US website that provides plain-language legal information for domestic violence survivors. It focuses on whether the Spanish version of WomensLaw.org is as accurate and accessible as the English version for a specific target audience: immigrant women from various Latin American countries living in the US with no specialized legal knowledge. The analysis found that four of the eight analyzed terms were inadequately reformulated in most instances, which shows that the Spanish version falls short of the English site’s standard. Key issues include a lack of clear distinctions between certain legal concepts, inconsistent terminology, and potentially misleading translations. However, the study also notes that some improvements were made during its drafting, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance the site's Spanish-language content.
