Abstract

This master's thesis examines the controversial Italian law No. 172/2023, which bans the production and marketing of cell-based meat and prohibits the use of meat-related designations for processed plant-based products — a practice commonly referred to as meat sounding. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the study explores the legal, linguistic, and communicative dimensions of the debate. Through terminological, qualitative, and contrastive analysis, it compares the Italian law with relevant EU legislation and investigates how multilingualism and institutional translation at the EU level shape national legal terminology. The research includes a comparative case study of similar legislative initiatives in France, an analysis of international guidelines (FAO & WHO), and a critical assessment of visual communication strategies used by stakeholders. Rather than evaluating the scientific merits of cell-based food, the study aims to understand how law and communication influence public perception and regulatory decisions. The findings suggest that the law is driven more by ideological motivations than by evidence-based policymaking, with language and media playing a key role in polarizing the issue.
