Dissecting Componential Emotion Representations Through a Video Game Paradigm

Abstract

This dissertation investigates the mechanisms underlying emotional experiences through the lens of appraisal theory, specifically the Component Process Model (CPM). Focusing on the roles of uncertainty (U) and goal obstructiveness (GO), the study introduces Elude, a custom-designed video game aimed at manipulating these two appraisal dimensions. Through immersive gameplay, participants engaged in goal-directed tasks, generating self-relevant emotional responses. The ACTIVEMO dataset, compiled from 55 participants, includes behavioural, physiological, and neural data, as well as subjective ratings. The reliability of these measures was validated, confirming consistent emotional responses across components. Findings show that participants perceived the intended manipulations and experienced corresponding emotional shifts. Distinct behaviours and brain activity patterns were identified for U and GO. Furthermore, dynamic analysis revealed interactions between cognitive and emotional brain regions. Overall, the research highlights how appraisals shape emotional responses, offering new insights into the functional architecture of emotion processing.
