Abstract

This thesis examines the place of inclusive writing in the digital world and more specifically in video game localization, through the comparison of the original English corpus of the video game Super Tux Kart to its French version. After determining the relevance of using inclusive and non-gendered writing, the various strategies already used in the literature are discussed. These strategies are feminization, neutralization of gendered nouns, the feminine-masculine doublet, abbreviated forms, neologisms and reformulations. The corpora analysis of the video game Super Tux Kart showed that there are more references to gender in the French version than the English version. What’s more, the original version uses more non-gendered terms of address than the French version. At the end of the day, this work gives new perspectives on how to make localization more inclusive, for example by suggesting the use of different corpora according to the users’ preferences or by rethinking the terminology.
