Abstract

This thesis investigates the application of Easy Language to an excerpt from Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed. While Easy Language has received recognition for its role in enhancing accessibility of administrative texts for people with cognitive and studying disabilities, its application to classical literature remains underexplored. Starting from a theoretical review of Easy Language, its origins and development within the Italian context, the study will explore the intralingual translation process and assesses its effectiveness. Italian-speaking individuals with disabilities are submitted a questionnaire to evaluate content readability and accessibility. The analysis of the resulting data will provide insights into the potential application of Easy Language to complicate literary works. Ultimately, this research contributes to the wider discourse on accessibility, thus extending Easy language also to non-specialist and institutional contexts.
