Impact of screen exposure on the development of joint attention in very preterm children at 12 months corrected age

Abstract

Given that digital devices are now an integral part of a child’s developmental environment, this study aimed to investigate the impact of screen exposure on joint attention in very preterm infants at 12 months corrected age. The primary hypothesis proposed that greater screen exposure would correlate with lower developmental and joint attention scores. Additionally, the secondary hypothesis suggested that parental screen habits could affect their child's development. To evaluate these hypotheses, screen habit data were collected from 64 premature infants. Alongside this data, all participants took part in an experimental task to assess joint attention abilities. The principal results indicated that a majority (60%) of very preterm infants had no screen exposure during their first year. No conclusive evidence was found regarding the detrimental effect of screen exposure on joint attention. However, a negative correlation was observed between higher screen time and language scores, consistent with existing literature. Finally, the questionnaires provided valuable insights into the screen exposure patterns of this specific population.
