Abstract

This master's thesis delves into the phenomenon of retranslation and focuses on the Italian retranslation of Achebe’s work No longer at ease (1960). This study aims to answer the following research question: what are similarities and differences between the two Italian translations of the book and what are the causes of its retranslation? Building on the framework established by Koskinen and Paloposki (2004), this research does not aim to test the retranslation hypothesis but adopts an inductive method to carry out an in-depth analysis of this retranslation case. The study reveals significant differences in various aspects of the two translations, which reflect distinct approaches to translating African novels. Moreover, the primary causes behind the retranslation stem from the author's and the book's enduring popularity. Such findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of retranslation dynamics, going beyond the retranslation hypotheses and shedding light on the complexities inherent in this phenomenon.
