Abstract

Despite international and national recommendations for gender equality, sexism still pervades our life in its subtle and diverse forms, being rooted even in the Italian language in a phenomenon known as linguistic sexism. This thesis focuses on the Italian language and how it discriminates women, conceals their experiences, and marginalises them in certain discourses, while highlighting inclusive language as a countermeasure. Moving from journalism and its role in shaping perceptions, we analysed Swiss and Italian articles from four newspapers with different political orientations. The aim was to assess women’s portrayal in the news, considering geographical and political influences on language and representation. Findings reveal that despite the evidence of women’s increased access in journalism, underrepresentation is still visible in certain sectors and their inclusion does not result from inclusive language. As expected, linguistic sexism and stereotypes were much more evident in right-wing newspapers, whereas the left-wing oriented Swiss newspaper prioritises inclusive language and women’s representation.
