Abstract

This thesis investigates the syntax of Tatar, a relatively understudied turkic language of the Russian Federation, within the framework of modern syntactic theory, namely the cartographic approach (Rizzi 1997, 2004, Cinque 1999, Belletti 2004, Cinque & Rizzi 2008). Based on the fundamental uniformity principle, observed in natural languages, we try to identify, compare and analyse the grammatical properties of such a morphologically rich head-final language as Tatar, giving new evidence of manifestations of rich functional sequences which characterize the main zones of the syntactic trees, as Complementizer phrase (CP), Tense phrase (TP) and Determiner phrase (DP).

As syntactic representations are fundamentally hierarchical, it is argued that the surface order of elements in the Tatar syntactic tree is accounted in terms of movement operations in order to obtain linear sequences of words in speech.
