Abstract

When performing their work, interpreters are constantly making decisions that may have ethical implications, since they may affect the participants in the communication or society as a whole. In order to guide this decision-making process, codes of ethics have been developed. Such codes are sometimes considered to be too rigid or abstract, as they fail to take into account the specificities of different contexts, and therefore do not always provide the necessary tools for interpreters to solve the ethical dilemmas they encounter. In an attempt to shed light on this issue, this analytical work reviews and critically examines the literature on ethics in interpreting. It identifies and analyses different approaches to ethics, the main ethical principles, contexts and dilemmas described in the literature, as well as possible strategies to train students and interpreters in ethics.
