Abstract

A grand challenge is found to be complex, uncertain, and evaluative, including such challenges as climate change, poverty, and economic and social inequality. This dissertation looks at Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 12.6 which looks to “encourage companies to adopt sustainable practices and sustainability reporting,” by studying from three different levels of analysis a key organization contributing to the achievement of this target: stock exchanges. Through the analysis of stock exchange activities this dissertation addresses a distinctive blind spot in the literature on how societal-level institutions are altered. Building on the institutional work literature and the growing literature pertaining to grand challenges, this study contributes to our understanding of addressing complex and cross-field challenges, producing new insights on orchestrating change through an ecosystem, partnering for change and the internal organizational shifts needed to support greater societal-level shifts.
