Abstract

This research employs the approach of didactics, a European phenomenon in the field of educational science, to analyze the teaching of classical piano. The analysis focuses on the transmission of a specific knowledge (savoir) known as tone production within the Russian piano school. Through didactic theories, we uncover a degree of uniformity in the teaching of piano tone production between the present and the past. In turn, we discuss why people vary in their recognition of the continued existence of the Russian piano school.
