Impact of Pulvinar Stroke on Attention Behaviour and Resting-State Connectivity

Abstract

The recruitement of brain loci by selective attention has been well characterised at the cortical level, through the VAN and the DAN networks. However, recent research has highlighted the role of subcortical structures in attention. In particular the pulvinar, the most posterior thalamic nuclei, has been hypothetised to act in attention engagement, as a filter distractor, or as a coordinator synchronizing top-down and bottom-up cortical signals. Here, fMRI resting state brain activity of stroke patients with pulvinar lesion and a matching control population was recorded prior an attentional task. Partial correlation between VAN, DAN, Saliency networks were calculated by FSLNets, and matched to lesion parameters and behavioural measures. The selective attentional task was designed with two contradictory stimuli to modulate top-down and bottom-up signal processing. Task's RTs behavioural analysis completed the analysis and along with prospective resting-state, results are in support of a broader view of the pulvinar, as a key-player in the harmonisation of endogenous and exogenous processes.
