Abstract

Over the years, the presence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment has been recognized as a major threat for the ecosystems. Pharmaceuticals are detected in seawaters, lakes, rivers, groundwater and even drinking water. The occurrence of these contaminants may have a negative impact on aquatic organisms and may also affect human health. Nowadays, the presence of pharmaceuticals in seafood and fish from contaminated areas or in vegetables irrigated with reclaimed water has been reported. Thus, humans may be exposed to pharmaceuticals by the consumption of environmental contaminated food.
