Abstract

Some studies have shown that pleasant scents have an effect on well-being, mood and self-ratings of attractivity. However, the effect of perfume on self-esteem has never been tested. The aim of this study is to assess the evolution of self-esteem after wearing one's own perfume compared to wearing none. To this end, a repeated-measure design was used to measure participant's self-esteem before and after wearing their perfume, compared to self-esteem evolution of participants not wearing any. Their self-esteem was measured both implicitly, using the Implicit Association Task, and explicitly using the State Self Esteem Scale which is composed of social, appearance and performance subscales. An increase in implicit self-esteem and in the social and appearance subscales of explicit self-esteem, is predicted for perfume wearers. Results reveal a significant effect of perfume on explicit social self-esteem, however no effect on explicit appearance self-esteem and on implicit self-esteem.
