Abstract

In the context of the growing importance of multilingual websites for international or interregional businesses, this study conducts a usability inspection of websites in the Swiss banking industry. The researcher tests web pages of 20 different Swiss banks in German, French and English for their compliance with usability guidelines. A heuristic checklist was used to analyse the data set with a focus on (1) technical and structural issues, (2) linguistic issues, and (3) the internal search function. Results show that in general usability guidelines are highly respected, although the internal search function could be much improved. Only a small difference between the language versions could be detected: English language pages contain a smaller error margin than the other languages do, while the ‘contact' pages, in comparison with the ‘about us' pages and the ‘home' pages, are the least error prone.
