Abstract Visualisation is often encopraged in interpreting courses as a mnemonic strategy. The present work explores visual mental imagery as a mnemonic strategy and its applications to consecutive interpreting. It also constitutes an account of the development of a multimedia self-study module for the first stages of consecutive interpreting that presents visualisation strategies to interpreting students. Students were instructed to use visual mental imagery in order to improve their rendition of a short consecutive interpretation without notes through imagery mnemonics and graphic icons to aid their visual mental imagery.
