Abstract

In the context of an ever-increasing use of social networks such as Facebook, researchers have started to look at the use of Facebook in higher education and the development of communities of practice in formal and informal virtual learning environments. However, no research so far has linked Facebook, the concepts of communities of practice and situated learning, and interpreter training, although the latter is a context prone to the creation of communities of practice and requires using and sharing internet resources. This study therefore aims to explore how a student Facebook group chat of FTI's MA in Conference Interpreting contributes to situated learning and to provide information for students and faculty about how Facebook is used so they can benefit from that knowledge when using Facebook or other means of communication. In this qualitative study, a student of FTI's MA in Conference Interpreting analysed the content of a Facebook group chat of five of her peers and conducted semi-structured interviews with the same participants.
