Abstract

An increasing number of researchers agree that general (i.e., non-specifically linguistic) processes could be critical in language acquisition and Developental Language Disorders (DLD). Cognitive inhibition, (i.e. rejection of irrelevant information for the task), has been studied here to consider these links. This thesis mainly aimed to explore the development of inhibition in 3 forms (motor, non verbal conflict / Stroop Animals, verbal / Cocktail party effect) and to consider it as a predictor of language acquisition, between 4 and 8 years. The results demonstrate a development of inhibitory control (Stroop and Cocktail) as well as the predictive character of the inhibition in the development of typical oral language, reading, and DLD, even more than phonology in some cases. The issue of multiple deficits in SLI, with the idea that the persistence of the disorders is related to a lack of inhibition, was discussed.
