Abstract

The present research aims to study the effects of Calque on translated texts in Arabic, an unexplored subject in translation studies in Arabic. It is also intended to show that Calque is often used automatically without thought and not out of a translation strategy. After an analysis of the procedure of direct translation, the research paper provides a theoretical framework including definitions, denominations, types of calque (semantic, phraseological, morphological and syntactic calques) and the reasons of its use. It also explains the difference between calque and other direct translation procedures, and shows when the use of calque is justified. Examples of calques are analysed according to their types and translation options are given on the basis of linguistic, semantic and stylistic arguments.
