A comparative analysis was carried out on the institutional and political discourse in order to analyze and assess the functional and communicative aspects of translating hedging expressions. The first chapter of this work establishes the relationship between the use of hedging words and the institutional character of the UN documents. The second chapter which represents the theoretical framework of this thesis, explores the characteristics and functions of hedging in linguistics as a pragmatic concept. The third chapter presents a comparative analysis of hedging expressions in a sample of UN texts in English and their translations into Arabic in order to assess the semantic and communicative accuracy of their translation based on the theoretical parameters described in the second chapter.
