Abstract

The medio-temporal lobe (MTL) is known for its role in episodic memory consolidation, however evidence suggests it is also involved in short-term memory. Using EEG, James et al. (2009) reported that immediate repetition of visual stimuli elicited a frontal response at 200-300ms post-stimulus onset emanating from the MTL, while repetitions after a delay were processed the same way as new presentations. This specific activation for immediate repetitions, however beneficial it was for immediate recognition, did not allow for full long-term consolidation tested 30 minutes later. Their findings suggest that immediate repetitions interfere with an ongoing consolidation process initiated by the previous new presentation.
