A number of volumes were published in recent years in French speaking countries, dealing directly or indirectly with Brentano's project of a psychology from an empirical standpoint and with its continuation in the works of his students. It is interesting to note that the research discussed here expand our knowledge of this project and its continuation in two directions. On the one hand, questions on the specificity of mental phenomena are discussed not only from the standpoint of the so-called Husserlian ‘pure' phenomenology; rather, they start from a larger perspective, namely phenomenology understood in a more general sense. On the other hand, ontological questions are debated in a larger framework, which is partly determined by the debates in contemporary philosophy of mind, and which also includes methodological and epistemological issues. The following contribution presents two edited volumes contributing in a fruitful way to the discussions on these questions.
