Abstract Children with biliary atresia rapidly develop liver fibrosis secondary to inflammatory destruction of the biliary tract. Noninvasive detection of liver fibrosis in neonatal/infantile cholestasis is an additional criterion for the diagnosis of biliary atresia, leading to prompt surgical exploration.
