Abstract

This masters thesis explores the conference interpreting market in Latin America in the hope of determining whether the region may be a source of new opportunities for conference interpreters. With this goal in mind, I sent a survey to conference interpreters domiciled in Latin America. The survey inquired about various aspects of their professional lives, including, inter alia, experience, training, language combinations, previous professional domiciles, travel, the number of days they work as conference interpreters in a given year, their perceptions of the market. The survey results reveal that conference interpreters in the region generally have advanced degrees, although these degrees are generally not in conference interpreting. They work primarily in the private market, and they generally work bidirectionally between English and Spanish or English and Portuguese.
