Abstract

Drawing on examples from children's books, this thesis looks at various aspects of translating for children, such as the definition of children's literature, its characteristics, and the intended and real of children's texts. Focusing predominantly on Le requin bleu, a children's story written in French by French author Jean-François Radiguet but set in South Africa, I examined certain translation theories and concepts (polysystem theory, transactional theory of reading, norms of translation, and functionalist theories) and their relevance to translating for children. I also translated extracts from the book and demonstrated how the specific features of the intended reader of my target text influenced the choices I made.
