Focusing predominantly on Le requin bleu, a children's story written in French by French author Jean-François Radiguet but set in South Africa, I examined certain translation theories and concepts (polysystem theory, transactional theory of reading, norms of translation, and functionalist theories) and their relevance to translating for children. I also translated extracts from the book and demonstrated how the specific features of the intended reader of my target text influenced the choices I made.
