Abstract

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a devastating disease with a poor prognosis for which a great research effort is currently ongoing to counter tumor resistance to conventional therapy. Solid malignant tumors have an abnormal vasculature, which is characterized by excessive leakiness that ultimately causes tumor interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) to be high. Elevated IFP has been demonstrated to impair fluid convection between the intra- and extra-vascular spaces and to decrease vascular transport. This convection drop is thought to be responsible for bad chemotherapy distribution into tumors leaving areas untreated, which could later be the cause of cancer recurrence.
