Abstract

During the school-to-work transition, young adults can access a range of resources through their personal relationships. These resources can be understood as social capital. Yet access does not necessarily lead to mobilization. This thesis examines this gap by asking how young adults make sense of their relationships and resources, and of whether and how they mobilize them. The study draws on a qualitative analysis of eighteen biographical interviews with young adults in French-speaking Switzerland who have experienced situations of vulnerability. The analysis identifies four recurring configurations of meaning and four corresponding logics of resource mobilization. Asking for, accepting, refusing, or finding alternatives to support involves balancing the resources at stake with what their mobilization means for the relationships through which they are accessed. The findings suggest that resources embedded in personal networks cannot be understood separately from these relationships and the meanings young adults attribute to them.
