Abstract

In this case report, we aim to describe the impact of the arrival of French-speaking asylum seekers in a crisis psychodynamic group. Through the analysis of six sessions, we try to assess the effectiveness of this form of psychotherapy for this population, and whether a technical adaptation is needed considering its specificities, particularly the high prevalence of trauma and the cultural diversity. We conclude that psychodynamic group therapy may represent an effective tool for asylum seekers, which can be explained by multiple mechanisms (i.e., the holding effect of the group on its participants, the sense of belonging to a community, the possibility to experience split emotions, and the ability to elicit attachment). However, clinicians should be especially careful to protect participants when highly traumatic experiences are shared within the group.
