Abstract

All propositions are either true or false. Yet, it seems that some are falser than others. Similarly, it appears that some propositions, while false, are, at least in part, true, i.e., partially true. That is particularly important for the assessment of scientific theories. For, strictly speaking, our best scientific theories are false. Yet, we want to say that they are true in some sense and are more true and less false than previous scientific theories. To this extent, we need a working notion of comparative verisimilitude to ascertain which propositions are more truthlike than others. The debate concerning this technical notion is a longstanding one. However, while substantial progress has been made, a completely satisfactory account of verisimilitude is still missing. In this thesis, I will offer a novel account of verisimilitude, pairing tools from measure theory and the formal background of truthmaker semantics. In doing so, I will provide an original assessment of the latter and a novel understanding of the notion of approximate truth.
