This thesis examines the role of boards of directors in the context of crises. Given that directors are often prone to turnover during a crisis, while simultaneously being expected to take on a more central role, it is essential to understand how boards manage their human capital resources under such conditions. The thesis is structured around three papers. The first paper provides a comprehensive review of the existing literature on boards of directors in times of crisis, highlighting the evolving impact of board characteristics across different crisis stages. The second paper analyzes how boards adjust their human capital throughout various phases of a crisis. The third paper investigates the role of the nomination committee in managing board resources during a crisis.
