With the rise of new technologies, audiovisual translation has become a more widespread field of study. Accessibility is central to this field, especially with regard to subtitles. This thesis conducts a comparative analysis of different versions of one episode of Gilmore Girls (Season 2, Episode 7) in order to examine the subtitling strategies employed in such a fast-paced series and their accessibility. The versions examined adhere to the guidelines established by Netflix and RAI. The research analyzes reduction strategies, the rendering of non-speech sounds, and cultural and humorous adaptations by comparing the original script, the Netflix’s English SDH, and the Italian dubbed version. A new Italian SDH version is then produced, following RAI standards and evaluated against the Netflix SDH. This comparison reveals notable differences in consistency, clarity, and completeness, highlighting how different guidelines can directly influence accessibility and viewer experience. Netflix SDH appear more intuitive but present inconsistencies, while the Italian SDH created following RAI guidelines tend to be more consistent but present some limitations. These findings highlight the necessity for more harmonized subtitling practices and suggest that improving SDH guidelines could enhance accessibility in audiovisual content.
