Characterizing the impact of emotion regulation and inhibitory control on food valuation

Abstract

This manuscript explores the impact of emotion regulation and inhibitory control on food valuation. A first project examines the regulation of positive, negative, and mixed emotions in individuals with Body Mass Indices (BMI) ranging from 18 to 44, showing successful emotion regulation independently of BMI. A second project evaluates the effects of gamified food-specific go/no-go training, a classical inhibitory control training paradigm, on wanting for food, regulation of desire for food, general inhibitory control, and body weight in individuals with BMIs ranging from 20 to 45. In the experimental condition of a between-participants design, participants were trained to inhibit high-calorie foods, while in the control condition, they inhibited both high- and low-calorie foods. Findings do not show evidence of food devaluation or weight change after training. Experimental training increased implicit wanting for food in the long term, especially when food rewards were easily accessible, yet also improved the ability to regulate the desire for food. General inhibitory control performance was strengthened in both training groups.
