Abstract

This chapter examines the use of ethnographic methods to analyse translation and interpreting practices in conflict and post-conflict settings. Ethnography, especially in recent years, has been increasingly used in Translation and Interpreting Studies (TIS) to investigate translation processes in the broadest sense and identify the social actors and communities of practice involved. This has been the case for conflict and post-conflict settings, including crisis, emergency, and humanitarian scenarios. This chapter focuses on ethnographic research methods to account for rich and situated cultural contexts and the complex world of other people’s meanings in the complex scenarios of an armed conflict or the challenging humanitarian and crisis settings that can be related to it even at a distance. The chapter explains the relevance of ethnographic research as a variety of field methods that enable researchers to cast light on contextualised practices. Then, this contribution presents a review of studies conducted on interpreting in conflict and post-conflict settings in which ethnographic methods have enabled the understanding and representation of phenomena through contextualisation and field observation in complex surroundings.
