Abstract

This article examines how the Italian religious diaspora is depicted in the historical writings of Gregorio Leti (1630–1701). Through a combination of documentary evidence and fiction, Leti offers an analysis of his historical sources that seeks to validate his own anticlerical interpretation of refuge. He challenges the founding historical myths of Reformed Orthodoxy, particularly the notion of evangelical zeal that guided the actions of the Reformers. Furthermore, by offering a critical view of the current situation in Christian Europe, which is divided by religious persecution and conflicts between faiths, Leti's historiography reveals a dissident yet moral approach to religion.
