Abstract

The paper studies the construction of ironic statements by Lady Violet Crawley in British TV drama Downton Abbey and their French dubbed versions. The first part of the analysis concentrates on how irony is constructed and the second part compares the French dubbed versions to the original script to see how irony is translated without losing the cultural essence and nuances across cultures.
