This collective issue examines the long history of women at work in “factories, workshops, and households” (subtitle of Margarethe Faas-Hardegger's L'Exploitée), i.e., in places that are both vectors of exploitation and bases for militant organization. It offers a journey through more than a century of history, beginning with the women's sections of the First International and ending with the nurseries of Geneva, via the Bulova watch factories in Neuchâtel and the cigar factories in Yverdon. In the wake of the 1991 women's strike and the 2019 feminist strike, we also wish to revisit this means of struggle to remind ourselves how feminist mobilizations, by renewing the use of this classic means of struggle of the labor movement, have broadened its definition and maximized its potential for conflict.
