Abstract

Dedicated to her teenage son Philippe, the memoirs of the Protestant noblewoman Charlotte Arbaleste were written at the end of the Wars of Religion in France. They reconstruct the family history and trace the political career of the family head, Philippe Duplessis Mornay. Studying this personal document as a 'family book' sheds light on the construction of Protestant identity, by then a religious minority. The examples of life it contains encourage spiritual resistance to the social pressure exerted on Protestant young people to convert to Catholicism in the years following the proclamation of the Edict of Nantes.
