This thesis analyses how cultural references present in the US version of the series The Office was translated into Spanish. The premise is that culturally marked elements present an additional challenge to the audiovisual translation process. The paper begins with an introduction about the series. Then, and following the studies of Chaume and Agost, it provides a definition of humor and the elements that constitute it. Lastly, it explains what audiovisual translation comprises and the difficulties it poses. The corpus, composed of the references found in the first seven episodes of the fifth season, was analyzed from a functionalist perspective, according to Nord’s theory. The translation solutions were categorized as suggested by Ranzato and Diaz Cintas & Remael. In this section, alternatives were also proposed and justified when the solutions are not entirely successful. The conclusions revealed that not all translations have preserved the functionality of the source text and the possibility of having multiple valid solutions for one specific type of reference.
