Abstract

Video game localisation involves adapting games for different languages and cultures, while fan translation plays a significant role when professional localisation efforts are lacking. In Iran, limited commercial localisation has resulted in a surge of fan initiatives, especially for popular games like Far Cry 3. Fan translators encounter various challenges, including the directionality of Persian text, cursive script, and text orientation. This study examines the localisation of Far Cry 3 into Persian by the Fansub team, focusing on the strategies employed by non-professional translators to overcome these obstacles. It evaluates the quality of the in-game text using metrics such as TAUS DQF and QT21, identifying common errors and assessing the overall quality of the localised version. By analysing these grassroots efforts, the study emphasizes the potential of fan translation to provide high-quality localised content and highlights their crucial role in enhancing accessibility to globally popular video games.
