Current state of the art of vestibular implants

Abstract

The significance of vestibular function often goes unnoticed until a vestibular deficit manifests. The vestibular system plays a crucial role in maintaining upright posture, while the inner ear system, in tandem with the visual system, aids in gaze stabilization. When this intricate balance system malfunctions, symptoms can vary. In cases of bilateral vestibulopathy, which occurs at a rate of 28–81 per 100,000 individuals, observable symptoms may include postural instability, swaying, or unsteadiness in low-light conditions. Patients with this condition face a 31-fold increase in the risk of falling, significantly impacting their quality of life. Currently, there is no established evidence-based medicine for treating this ailment. Physicians typically rely on vestibular rehabilitation to assist patients. Research is ongoing into vestibular implants as a potential solution to restoring balance. This section aims to provide an overview of the current status of vestibular implants.
