This master’s thesis investigates the use of gender-inclusive language in Swiss academia. In particular, this study observes which inclusive language strategies, to what extent and why, are implemented in the emails sent by the rectories of the University of Lucerne, of Geneva and of Lugano to their academic communities. The investigation involves analysing three corpora of emails sent between 2019 and 2022. This inductively analysed data is combined with interviews aimed at understanding the motivations behind linguistic choices as well as the analysis of the universities’ inclusive language guidelines. The research found that gender-inclusive language is regularly used, but strategies to refer to non-binary individuals are absent. It also revealed that the rectories of Lucerne and Geneva rigorously employ inclusive language, emphasizing their commitment to maximum inclusivity and equal visibility of both feminine and masculine forms. In contrast, at the University of Lugano the unmarked masculine form is still present due to practicality, but it is less frequent in opening phrases.
